Many people associate sports massage with high-performance athletes and do not think that it could be beneficial to them. In fact, sports massage is great for just about anyone. Sports massage is an essential part of both prevention and treatment of injuries. It also helps to ensure and maintain correct posture, and can relieve muscle tension and cure aches and pains even if you don’t do any sport at all.
If you spend long hours sitting at a desk, frequently lifting objects, or driving a vehicle, you may find your posture changing. You may find you have rounded shoulders, or you feel tightness in your back, or you find your flexibility or range of motion in a joint reduced. All of these are indications of muscular imbalances. Generally, a muscle on one side is tight and short, whereas the muscle on the other side is long and relaxed, but weak. A sports massage can help to address this postural imbalance and restore your flexibility and range of motion. Your therapist will also show you a range of stretches that you can do on the tight muscles to further improve the situation.
Sports massage is not intended to be relaxing but you will usually find that any soreness disappears after a day or two. The short-term pain is small compared to the long-term gain.
